The Brûlerie des Monts: A Tale of Passion. The founder, Howard Sauvé, was driven by a deep passion for the craft of roasting coffee and entrepreneurship.

After honing his skills in Montreal’s coffee roasting scene for over fifteen years, Howard fulfilled a lifelong dream. On June 30, 1995, he opened his own artisanal roasting houses with a clear commitment: to serve the finest coffee in the Laurentides.

The Brûlerie des Monts is also a story of love and partnership between Howard and his wife, Elizabeth-Ann Cochrane, affectionately known as Betty, a valuable ally in the Brûlerie’s adventure.

Additionally, the Brûlerie des Monts is a tale of falling in love with the historic building that houses the roastery at the intersection of Principale and de l’Église streets, witnessing the cheerful echoes of satisfied customers and the enchanting aroma of freshly roasted coffee.

A tight-knit family story and a team united by the same goal: providing an authentic and quality experience to all customers!

Each team member plays a crucial role in the company’s success. In fact, several employees have been with us since the very beginning, and their wealth of experience contributes to the Brûlerie’s success.

What’s better than a work of art to capture the craft of roasting?

Our iconic Sniffer, beautifully depicted on our coffee bags, is a reproduction of a pencil artwork created by the very first roasting employee at Brûlerie des Monts. The Sniffer represents the sensory relationship between the roaster and the beans during the roasting process.

Long before automation processes were introduced, the roasters’ sense of smell would reveal the perfect roast level for the beans, enhancing all their aromas and flavors. One could even say that the roasting process requires a sixth sense: intuition! Roasting is an art guided by passion and experience.

Proudly displayed in our dining area, The Sniffer is, in a way, the emblem of Brûlerie des Monts. It symbolizes the respect we give to our products.

Throughout the years, our master roaster has mentored many employees, generously imparting the nuances of the roasting art. Notably, several former employees who began their roasting journey at Brûlerie des Monts have since established their own roasteries across the country, achieving remarkable success. This is a source of immense pride for Howard.
